APNs Server Certificate Update: Key Details for Developers
This certificate transition was completed in February 2025. This article is maintained for historical reference.
Apple announced an update to its Apple Push Notification service (APNs) server certificates. This change impacts how applications connect with APNs in both Sandbox and Production environments. Netmera is prepared to handle these changes, so your push notifications continue reaching users without interruption.
APNs Certificate Update Timeline
Apple will implement server certificate updates for APNs on the following dates:
- Sandbox Environment: January 20, 2025
- Production Environment: February 24, 2025
These updates involve transitioning to a new SHA-2 Root certificate: USERTrust RSA Certification Authority. Apple requires developers to verify their applications’ Trust Stores include this new certificate to maintain secure connections with APNs.
How Netmera Handles APNs Certificate Updates
Netmera manages the server certificates and Trust Store configurations required to connect with APNs securely. Our infrastructure is updated to align with Apple’s changes before the February deadline, which means your push notifications will continue delivering without any gaps.
What this means: You don’t need to update your iOS applications or modify any Netmera configurations. We handle the technical requirements on our end.
Required Actions for iOS Apps Using Netmera
You don’t need to make any changes to your iOS applications or Netmera configurations.
However, we recommend testing your push notifications after February 24, 2025. This testing will confirm that your notifications continue performing as expected and reaching your users.
SSL Provider Certificates: No Changes Required
Apple has clarified that this server certificate update does not affect APNs SSL provider certificates issued to developers. No additional work is required on your end related to these certificates.
